Avenge or Revenge?

Avenge or Revenge?

Turn to page 1287 of the Fourth Edition of Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary, and refer to the word revenge. When this word is used as a verb, it says, it is a transitive one, which means a noun or a noun phrase can be used as the object of it, e.g., to revenge an injustice, failure, injury, etc. Alike, it has the same meaning with the word avenge, so we can also avenge an injustice, failure, injury, etc.

Then turn to page 89 of the Sixth Edition of Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary, and refer to the Grammar Point on Avenge/Revenge. There it says people revenge themselves on somebody or are revenged on them, e.g., He later revenged himself on his wife’s killer. You cannot revenge something, which means the sentence she vowed to revenge her brother’s death is wrong.

A Melodramatic Fool

A Melodramatic Fool

For approximately two weeks not talking to her, I am sinking into a state of torper. I wonder how well she is recuperating, both physically and mentally.

Sarcastically, I grudged her her statement that she is maturer than me, and more like that, I brooked no caprice of her when she was on the weakest and downhearted side – she’s been physically ailing. Pretty much to my chagrin, my maturity will always be so diminishing in face of her, the girl who is capricious but, more significantly, grown up, as not to conceal my crass stupidity, and as to mouth any unwanted and churlish words that are intolerable.

I always thought, when my pals are taking inconceivable steps on a whim, that I am the pacifier that pampering them. But unluckily, I am the one who is always being cosseted. It was exactly me who ruined the harmony between she and I, and it was her who condoned her confidant. But the point is that a jackass doesn’t have a second chance.

So I said there’s barely a recipe for disaster when she told me I am not her confidant any more.

I Ain’t No Computer Expert

I Ain’t No Computer Expert

” I ain’t got no recipe for installing a docile antivirus for you computer, I ain’t got no Microsoft Office 2007 or Powerword 2007 on my D drive, and I ain’t got no idea of what the freak is wrong with your computer, ‘cos I ain’t no computer expert.”

I didn’t actually say that to my pals for lacking of guts, but I did want to.

We are not in the Stone Age but where information technology have long been overwhelming. It would sound preposterous to me if you are still gonna have to spend around 100 kuai buying an antivirus program while it normally costs me 5 kuai, and the very one of that I bought would normally be installed on 5 computers at least. That worked well, always. Don’t ask me where to buy that before you know ICBC, which is the very personality you’ve got to resort to if you are really buying that, has become one of the ten richest corporations globally. And what makes it more preposterous or outrageous is the uncertainty I often have to face when I just finish reconnoitering the whole doggone vista system, replacing it with the damn XP, and reinstalling all programs and software all over again.

Could things be worse? I would say “yeah” when all the same, and conceivable problems come from nowhere again, just like what I did was nothing but a piece of shit.

Sarcastically, I could only assume a posture of a dabbler while sweating profusely when somebody takes me as an expert, and asks me what programs I have made. And I could only say that I just can read such languages as HTML and CSS, not capable of speaking them. I don’t even know how to assemble a computer from pieces, though I worked as a computer salesman before.

I am coerced and have to shun my “clients”, not in a arrogant, or patronizing way, but I am really a computer illiterate.

How Much Data Is That? ——比GB还大是多大?

(This article originates from James S. Huggins’ Refrigerator Door, and I am personally obliged to Mr. Huggins for his sharing)

Note: The information shown below uses measures only associated with data. For example, a kilo-anything is 1000 . . . except that when it is a kilobyte, it is 1024, an even power of two.
提示:以下信息中量度标准均与数据有关。如:kilo-表示1000………但在kilobyte中,它代表1024,一个2的偶次幂。

How Much Data Is That?

Whenever we discuss quantities of data, we tend to do it in the abstract. We speak of a kilobyte, or a megabyte or a gigabyte without really knowing what it represents.
我们总在抽象概念中讨论数据的大小。我们经常提到KB、MB、和GB,但并不知道它们到底代表什么。
